Process log

Nathan wrote his first program at eight years old. Everything since has been a variation on the same question — what happens if I take this apart and put it back together better? In 2004 he co-founded SiteHost on the idea that hosting could be run by people who actually answer the phone, and has spent the two decades since keeping up with what that turned into.

These days the group includes Webslice, which puts serverless and containerised infrastructure in front of developers and agencies who’d rather ship than babysit servers. Day to day his work is management, sales and procurement — which is to say the parts of a hosting company that don’t show up in a traceroute.

What’s left of his spare time goes to football, and to mentoring other people trying to build a business without learning every lesson the expensive way.

What PHP Vitals tells you
about the platform underneath

Installing a diagnostics plugin is easy. Reading what it says about the hosting layer you’re sitting on — serverless, containerised or otherwise — is the interesting part. A live install, real numbers, and what they mean.
